My name is Max A. Cheng, and I am excited to serve as a Senior Development Editor for Volume 30 of the Journal of Gender, Race & Justice! I've called many places home over the years—I was born in Seattle, raised in Taipei, and later returned to the United States to earn dual degrees in Biochemistry and Music from the University of Rochester and the Eastman School of Music. Before coming to Iowa Law, I worked as a scientific grant writer at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, studied medicine in Brisbane and New Orleans, and worked as an EMT. Those experiences inspired me to pursue a legal career focused on advancing health equity and expanding access to justice

At Iowa Law, I also serve as a Contributing Editor for the Iowa Law Review, where my student Note is forthcoming. During my 1L summer, I served as a judicial extern for the Honorable Chief Judge C.J. Williams of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa. This past summer, I was a Pro Bono Summer Intern with the Legal Aid Society of San Diego, helping low-income clients navigate a wide range of civil legal matters, including protective orders, housing issues, and name and gender marker changes.

Outside of law school, I enjoy exploring our national parks, taking road trips, and cheering on Seattle sports. So far, I've visited twenty national parks and half of all Major League Baseball ballparks, and I'm always looking forward to the next adventure.

I am honored to be part of JGRJ and to work alongside such a dedicated editorial board committed to publishing scholarship that advances equality, challenges injustice, and gives voice to perspectives that deserve to be heard.
